Pakistan is a water-scarce country with a growing population with an enormous gap between the urban rich and the rural poor. On one side of the socio-economic chasm, water flows liberally. On the other side, approximately 50 percent of people in rural areas have no access to safe and clean drinking water and improved sanitation (1). When adding in the fact that Pakistan is also a complex gendered society, an undeniable truth is revealed: lack of access to clean water is a particularly harrowing burden and threat to women.
